Characters: In oracle bones, the first character 衣 looked like a top with two arms coming out of the sleeves. It originally meant to put clothes on. Now it simply means clothes.

The second character 服 did not have the radical on the left in oracle bones. It was an image of a prisoner who is forced to get on his knees. Later, an image of a cangue, a device to humiliate criminals, was added to the character. It originally meant a prisoner wearing a cangue. Now it simply means clothes.
