猪(zhū)pig

Chinese name: 猪

Pinyin: zhū

English name: pig

Character: This character consists of two parts, the dog radical 犭on the left and the phonetic part “者” (Pinyin: zhě) on the left. Originally the left part was 煮 which means to boil food.

Interesting fact:  There are over 400 million pigs in China, thats over 6 times more than in the USA, the country with the next largest number of pigs. If you visit rural China at the time of New Year don’t be surprised if you hear blood curdling squeals as it is common for each household to slaughter a pig for the upcoming celebrations.
