八 bā (eight)

Chinese: 八

Pinyin: bā

English: eight

Imagery: two watermelon halves

History of character: The character looks like two smooth curves which indicates separation, but it lost its original meaning after the creation of the character “cut”. Now it simply means eight. The number eight is considered an auspicious number because of its similar pronunciation to the character “发” (pinyin: fā, meaning: prosperity). Therefore, Chinese people, especially businessmen, favour it very much. The opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing began on 8th of the 8th month at 8 minutes and 8 seconds past 8 pm local time.
